Megadeth – “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?” (1986)

Of the vaunted Big Four of thrash metal, Megadeth may have been the most unpredictable, as well as the most technically savvy.  One can’t deny that Dave Mustaine had one of the most vicious right hands in the business.  Mustaine dished out contorted, inventive, note-dense riffs at warp speed.  This, along with his band’s shredding solos and unorthodox writing, probably made Megadeth the musician’s choice for favorite Big Four act.  Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying continued along the same ornery path of its explosive predecessor Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good!.  Luckily for us fans, this time ’round the production was much improved.  Mustaine, cynical and sarcastic as always, delivered his lyrics through clenched teeth — railing on about injustice, Satan and violence.  Megadeth even broke away from their usual complex style to deliver a (relatively) basic, groove-laden piece in the stellar title track.  (Remember when MTV used that iconic bass line on their news updates?).  Peace Sells features some great lyrics; “If there’s a new way, I’ll be the first in line.  It better work this time.”  I’m also fond of Devils Island and Good Mourning/Black Friday.  I love that Paint the devil on the wall!” part at the end!  More good sick fun from Mustaine and crew.  This band was simply brimming with creative juices.  Chemical too.  My score: B+

  1. This is a fantastic album and I agree with all your comments. I saw Megadeth in London in 87. Unfortunately the band’s equipment got tied up in customs so they didn’t have a decent sound check. For the first few songs, Dave went backstage with a rather pissed off look on his face.

  2. Who cares about the so-called ” big 4″. I love the big 400 of thrash metal.

I am glad to see the Metallica ” No Life ‘ til Leather” demo, still widely circulated these days even on CD.

Dave Mustaine is a genius, alongside Katherine Thomas aka THe Great Kat. Dave the RIFF lord, and Kat, the shredd-wizzard.

The Greatest album of all time goes to Megadeth ” Rust In Peace” in the realm of traditional metal…if not the greatest album, but for sure a many headbangers favorite album.

Megadeth, one of a kind and unique…!!!!!!!
